The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
